Meet “Dr. Gene”

Dr. Eugene L. Alford MD FACS has been in practice since 1992. He came to Houston after completing his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. and Fellowships in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Facial Plastic Surgery at The University of Michigan. Dr. Alford joined the Faculty of Baylor College of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology where he successfully practiced for 5 years. In 1997 Dr. Alford was a founding partner of Texas ENT Consultants. In order to better serve his patients Dr. Alford in 2008 began his solo private practice Alford ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Alford is a world renowned Specialist in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery having authored more than 45 original peer reviewed articles, written 14 original book chapters, and given more than 100 invited lectures locally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Alford has served on the editorial board of 10 national medical journals, and been an Invited Guest Professor at 14 different U.S. and International Medical Schools.

Dr. Alford’s passion and is cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face head and neck with a special emphasis and expertise in rhinoplasty.  Dr. Alford’s training in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery and his vast experience in reconstructive surgery gives him a leg up over other Facial Plastic Surgeons in that his training “is more than skin deep”. He understands the deeper anatomy of the face so that he can safely and effectively enhance these tissues of the face to create a strong, solid foundation of support to allow the changes in the surface of the skin to appear natural and be long lasting.  He performs the full scope of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery including face lift, mid-face lift, neck lift, brow lift, blepharoplasty, otoplasty , rhinoplasty and reconstructive surgical procedures. Facial fillers such as Juvederm, Sculptura, and Botox complete Dr. Alford’s ability to treat and improve one’s facial appearance. Dr. Alford in his 20 years as a Facial Plastic Surgeon has performed hundreds of each of these procedures and his experience is second to none. The goal of Dr. Alford interventions is to improve, not change a person’s appearance. The end result is to achieve a balance of the facial features so that the nose, face brow, eyes and neck all fit together to create an appearance of a well rested, youthful, vibrant, alert and intelligent person.

Dr. Alford and his colleague Dr. Charles N.S. Soparkar MD PhD have a special expertise in the management of a variety of problems if the eye including thyroid eye disease, Graves disease, fractures, as well as tumors of the eye and skull base. Drs. Alford and Soparkar together having the performed more surgery for correction of Thyroid Eye Disease (Graves Disease) than any other group in the United States.

The third area of Dr. Alford’s expertise is in the management of routine and complex benign and malignant tumors of the face head and neck as well as reconstruction of the face following  removal skin cancers such Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, or Melanoma. From his experience in primary management of Head and Neck Cancer, Dr. Alford can not only achieve a beautiful cosmetic and functional reconstruction; the procedure will be done in such a way to not compromise the cure of the malignancy.

Dr. Alford has appeared on Television many times as an expert in Facial Plastic Surgery including The OPRAH Show, Larry King Live, The Discovery Channel, and most of the local Houston Television Stations.

In December of 2007 Dr. Alford while working at his farm was injured by a falling tree suffering a spinal cord injury which paralyzed him from the waist down. After 10 months in the hospital and grueling  rehabilitation at The Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research  Dr. Alford returned to the practice of medicine and surgery performing operations from an electric wheelchair that allows him to stand and operate normally. He continues his rehab and recovery with daily work at home and supervised rehab at The Methodist Hospital Outpatient Rehab Department. Dr. Alford is married to Dr. Mary Alford DDS and has three children John, Bess, and Charles.
